Horse Bits

Horse bits are metal mouthpieces that help the rider to control the horse. Horse bits rest on the toothless, gummed portion of the horse’s jaw known as the bars. They play a very important role while you are engaged in various equestrian activities. You have to place the bit in the mouth of the horse by means of a bridle with reins attached to the same. The equestrian knights use the reins to control the horse. Following are some of the different types of horse bits available.

Snaffle Bit

Snaffle bits are the most common horse bits available. They use a bit mouthpiece with a ring. These bits are available in single- or double-jointed mouthpiece. The feature of these types of the bits is that they are very effective in creating direct pressure leverage on the mouth of the horse.

Curb Bit

Curb horse bits use leverage to control the horses while riding them. Curb bits are usually popular among Western horse riders. These bits use pelham bit and the Weymouth curb. These bits are more severe in comparison to the snaffle bits. In the curb bits, there are shanks that come off the bit mouthpiece. This is very effective in creating pressure to the poll, chin groove and mouth of the horse. These bits are usually solid without joints.

Pelham

With a mouthpiece, a shank, a curb chain, Pelham is very much like the curb horse bits. Two rein rings are attached on every side of the shank. There is also a top rein ring, similar to the one you find in a snaffle bit. That is the reason why it is also referred to as snaffle rein. Likewise, the lower reign is also referred to as curb rein because of its similarity to the one used in curb horse bits.

There are certain other types of horse bits as well, such as Kimberwicke, gag bit etc. The best solution for your horse is to use a mild bit that works best with the individual horse.
